What is Dowry Calculator?
A dowry calculator is an online tool used to estimate the appropriate dowry amount based on various factors such as income, education, profession, family background, and cultural expectations. It simplifies the process by providing a quick, personalized calculation, often for fun or discussion rather than serious use.
What actually is Dowry Calculator?
Dowry Calculator – A Tool for Social Awareness
The Dowry Calculator is not intended to promote or endorse the practice of dowry in any form. Instead, it serves as a social awareness initiative designed to shed light on the harmful and deeply rooted cultural practice of dowry, which continues to affect countless lives across India. This calculator acts as a thought-provoking tool to highlight how absurd and unjust the commodification of marriage through dowry demands can be. By simulating the so-called “value” of a person based on superficial factors like salary, education, and social status, the tool brings attention to the negative consequences and societal damage caused by this social evil.
Under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code, which has been in effect since 1961, the giving or taking of dowry is considered a criminal offence. The law clearly states that if a husband or his relatives subject a woman to cruelty—particularly in connection with demands for dowry—they can face imprisonment for up to three years, along with a monetary fine.
The law defines harassment or cruelty as any willful conduct intended to pressure the woman or her family into meeting unlawful demands for money, property, or any form of valuable security. If a woman is harassed due to her or her family’s failure to meet such demands, it constitutes a punishable crime.
Through satire and simulation, the Dowry Calculator aims to educate, provoke thought, and ultimately discourage the acceptance of dowry in society. It is a call to action for change, urging individuals and communities to stand against this outdated and oppressive tradition.
